At this age, babies are just learning to explore and navigate the world around them, and parents of course want to provide toys that are developmentally appropriate and advance their skills. Here are some versatile toys that do just that for infants between 0-6 months. Click on the pictures for a link to the toy.
* A note about visual development! The womb is a dark environment, and thus babies only see in muted tones (black, gray, white) after birth. High contrast, black and white toys will stand out for babies, and are excellent first toys.
1) Toys for tummy time:
· Mirror: although your baby will not be able to recognize themselves yet, it creates a visual incentive to reach out, touch, and explore.
· Water mat: these mats are put on the floor, and as your baby gets more comfortable with tummy time, they will enjoy pushing on it and feeling the movement of the water and bright colored toys inside.
· Activity mat: these can be expensive, but they are versatile. A mat provides a safe environment for your baby to reach in supported sitting, to reach while lying on their back getting ready to roll, and try to kick.
2) Toys for grasp:
· A large toy for grasp that can be held with both hands promotes midline development.
· Blocks that will fit in the palm of the hand (but cannot be swallowed!)
3) Toys for sensory development:
· I love touch and feel board books- it is never too early to begin reading with your child!
· Textured blocks or balls that engage the tactile sensory system:
· A rattle to promote auditory tracking. Here is a cute option:
· Make your own sensory mats with plastic bags to engage safe sensory exploration. Post to come about how to do this safely.
There are now several subscription toy boxes that provide developmental toys for each age range (cost can vary). A few popular ones include: Lovevery and Kiwico Baby.
